Tuesday 3/24 Week 2
Assignment: Good Morning, I miss seeing you guys, so here is today's assignment.
Write a friendly letter to me that includes the following:
Salutation 2 paragraphs (each about 75 words) Closing and Name
Content: Here are some of the things you can discuss.
How you are doing? How is your homework load? What has been the biggest challenge you have had to face over the past week? What are you doing with your added free time? What do you wish teachers understood about what is important to you during this challenging time? How you are progressing on your assignments in this class?: (Do this one for sure). Anything else you want to add or just say "hi".
Below is a sample as to how your letter should structurally look:
Dear Eileen, {Salutation or Greeting}
[BODY] It has been so long since we last talked. I can’t believe how busy I have been lately with the children. We recently joined the YMCA and have been swimming almost every day. Dorothy and Katherine are taking gymnastics classes; they look so cute trying to do their somersaults. Amber, of course, has been riding every day. She and Nellie are really enjoying all the nice weather. Paul has been keeping busy with all his projects. Recently, he moved our pool because it was leaning to one side. It took him four days and two truckloads of sand to make a nice level spot for the pool.
[BODY] How are things going for you? Did you have a nice trip to Oregon? I sure hope the weather was pleasant. You asked if I had ever been to Portland in your last letter. Actually, Paul and I took the girls to the Portland Zoo last year, and we all enjoyed it so much! They have a neat train ride you can go on that takes you through the park. I was thinking that since Oregon is between our two states, maybe we all can meet somewhere and have a family reunion next summer. It would be so nice to see you and your family again. I look forward to hearing from you soon so I can hear all about your trip to Oregon. See you soon,, {Closing} Juli {Signature}
I would like you to e-mail me this letter by Wednesday at 5:00 to: [email protected] Stay safe,

4. Why must the conspiracy act by March 18th?
5. At least according to this documentary, what are Caesar’s final words to Brutus? What could they possibly infer?
Short essay: (about three sentences) After watching this documentary, do you feel more or less sympathetic concerning Caesar compared to the character of Caesar we get in the play?
LAST THING: I'm going to run a ZOOM video conference at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. It will probably be a disaster, but I thought we would give it a try. Something to talk about: Sayid and Shannon is a thing? What do you think about that? I'll send instructions tomorrow for Friday.

2. What happens to Arnold at the end of the chapter?
3. Once again Malcolm (who is in bad shape) voices his philosophical concerns concerning the abuses of science. What is the focus of his rant in this section? Is he justified?
Last Thing: We are going to meet as a class tomorrow at 1 on ZOOM. Please have two questions written down from Boone and Shannon's episode to get the conversation going. Personal Interest Project
Part One
Give a description about what your personal interest entails. Give about three or four sentences that fully describes what drives your interest in this subject and how it makes you, the class, or the world a better. (or you at least make us more knowledgeable about something important or interesting)
2. What is the scope of your topic: Personal, local, national, global?
3. .What are the benefits of your personal interest to you and/or to those around you?
4. Discuss any recent news or controversy that might be associated with your topic?
5. Everything comes from something. What are the roots or history of your topic? How did your area of interest get started? Where might it be headed in the future?

Tuesday 3/31---NO ZOOM TODAY WE WILL MEET FRIDAY AT 1:00.
Continue working on the first part of your Personal Interest Project. You can e-mail it to me when you are done if you want me to look it over.
After watching Walt's episode, respond to the question below:
Does Walt have supernatural powers? Does he have them before he arrived at the island or does the island allow Walt to manifest his potential. Did Walt get here by accident or is there the possibility of darker forces surrounding the circumstances of Walt's mother's death? Think about it...the mom dies, and Brian is literally at Michael's house the next day with airlines tickets on a certain doomed flight--coincidence? (about 5 to 7 sentences)
Wednesday 4/1
Thank you to all that have sent me their info sheet for their Personal Interest Project--everything I've seen so far looks great.
Jurassic Park: Read "Return"
Then watch the video below:
As an English teacher, by default, I think I'm supposed to always choose the novel interpretation over the movie, but this one is tough. There are times when there is a good deal of action in a scene that movies have a natural advantage.
Answer the following question in 5 to 7 sentences. Which interpretation of the "kitchen scene" is more effective? Is there a difference in tone between the novel and the movie? Which version does a better job at character development? Which one does a better job of relaying dramatic tension?
Remember that our ZOOM meeting is Friday at 1;00. Looks like we are going to have some teacher and admin visitors.
.Just looking ahead a little: Tomorrow's assignment will be watching Charlie's episode: "Homecoming"
The return of --you know who--ANOTHER MAN!!!
Thursday
Watch Charlie's episode "Homecoming". Then answer the following questions: (5 to 7 sentences)
Does Ethan make an effective antagonist? why so? Who was the genius that decided to give Boone a shift? Can this guy do anything right? Of the five people that get guns, who should NOT get one? Was Charlie justified in his final solution? Do Claire and Charlie have a future?
IF you have not sent me your Info sheet, do that today or tomorrow at the latest.
Bring your Jurassic Park book as well. We will discuss some of Iteration 6.
Our ZOOM meeting will be tomorrow at 1:00.

See you guys at 1:00
Monday 4/13
Hey Guys, I know there is a ton of speculation as to how the rest of the semester will play out, but we are supposed to get a ton more guidance on our end by the middle of the week. As of right now, the one thing that we do know for sure is that digital learning will happen Monday through Thursday with Friday being for one on ones and collaboration.
Today we will focus on the next two sections in Jurassic Park called "The Grid" and "Lodge". Please read and answer the following two questions: (total of about 5-7 sentences)
How does Grant really step up as the hero in the novel particularly in "Lodge"? He is really starting to take control of the decisions that need to be made.
In your opinion, are the raptors or the T-Rex more of a terrifying threat? Both are deadly and dangerous, but how is the tone different when each of these two different types of antagonists are presented in the text?
WATCH LOST: "OUTLAWS" by Wednesday. Love him or hate him--it's Sawyer time. Maybe one of the impactful opening scenes in LOST.
Tuesday 4/14
Hey Guys, check back later today for an update on how grading is going to work moving forward. Probably after about 3:00.
WATCH LOST: "OUTLAWS" by Wednesday. Love him or hate him--it's Sawyer time. Maybe one of the impactful opening scenes in LOST. Pay careful attention to the Christian Shepard/Sawyer scene (yes, that is what I said). It is awesome--great writing.
Your assignment today is to read the last part of Iteration 6 "Control".
Please answer the following questions:
1. Is it believable that Tim is the one that restarts the computers? Where did he learn how to do this?
2. Help is on the way. What needs to be done before Grant and the rest of the survivors can leave?
3. Should Hammonds go unpunished? You could make the case that all this pain, suffering, and death is because of him? thoughts?
Wednesday 4/14
Please watch the video below:
The first two scenes in this video are from :"Outlaws". The final part of the clip is from the season finale.
MY FAVORITE SCENE!!!!
What is the message of this scene concerning what we say and what we feel? How does this scene help create the defining moment in Sawyer's life? In case you have not put it together, this is also the night that Christian dies from his alcoholism. How is this meeting between Sawyer and Christian turn out to be both tragic and redemptive? How does the end of this clip provide closure for all three men?
About 6 to 8 sentences.
We will do a zoom soon to talk about this one---GREAT WRITING!!!
Thursday 4/16
Today we get a little philosophical. Read the following passage on 20th century existentialism. Does this concept apply to LOST in general? Specifically, does it apply to the Sawyer/ Jack/ Christian dynamic that we looked at yesterday?
Living a life naturally raises the question “How does it all make sense?” This question belongs to the nature of life because our lives are thoroughly limited; they are an experience with boundaries, in space and time and extension. As a result, although things do make some sense to us (otherwise, we wouldn’t even know enough to be puzzled by them), they make sense only to an extent. The events of our lives always fit into a larger context that extends beyond our awareness, and so they are shot through with elements that do not make sense to us and that may or may not have a meaning we haven’t been able to grasp. Because of this wider context, the things and the events of our lives, on the one hand, never make full and final sense but, on the other hand, don’t even give us the security of knowing that we can dismiss them as making no sense at all so that we can move on. Existentialism, a school of twentieth-century philosophy, explores themes of the nature of human existence (as we are doing now). Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre (1905–1980), and Albert Camus (1913–1960) were perhaps the most famous existentialists. Some of them argued that life is simply absurd, without rhyme or reason, that we really are “lost” in the universe. We must therefore create our own meanings and purposes. Yet I think these existentialists didn’t come to terms with just how lost we are. We really don’t even have that much definite information about our situation—that we are definitely or completely lost. Instead, it seems to me that life is only in part a jumble of arbitrary accidents and apparently inexplicable events. There is the “other hand”: life is also shot through with strands and connections of sense. And this presence of both understanding and lack of understanding makes life neither reliably understandable nor reliably senseless, but more like a riddle or a mystery: deeply puzzling, but with enough things that we do understand to give us “clues” to wonder in particular directions for answers.
IIrwin, William. Ultimate Lost and Philosophy (The Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture Series) (pp. 112-113). Wiley. Kindle Edition. Yes, this is a real book that I own.==is that sad?
So are all of our characters just LOST because that is the natural order of things, or is there some hope of seeing at least some connection and unity in a seemingly disconnected world...I mean TV show.. (we are just talking about the show of course)
Just add a couple of sentences to the writing you did on Wednesday. It's all sort of connected...or is it. (ohhhh--metaphysical!!!)
Also, let's do a ZOOM on Tuesday and talk about some stuff.
Watch the next episode by Tuesday: "in Translation" A Jin episode--it's really good! Someone finds out someone else can speak English--guess who?
We will return to Jurassic Park on Monday.
Monday 4/20
Jurassic Park: Well, we are winding down to the end. Read " Destroying the World and Under Control" and answer the following question: (4 to 6 sentences)
One of the most interesting arguments in the novel takes place between Hammonds and Malcolm in this section. Hammonds discusses that he is glad that the world was not destroyed by his mistakes--Malcolm calls out that statement as false and egocentric. Do you agree with Malcom's argument that the earth has the ability to heal and continue regardless of natural disasters, cosmic events, or even poor decisions by mankind?
Tuesday: We will do a Zoom at 1:00. Even if you are sold with your grade, tune in and talk about LOST for a few minutes.
We will discuss Jin and the big reveal concerning Sun. Also, I know Jin gets a bad rap at the beginning of the season; has the needle moved on this character after his POV episode.
Last thing, if you are submitting assignments with your Microsoft 365 e-mail, it is not letting me respond. Please don't think i'm being rude; I usually try to respond when you send me work.
See you Tuesday at 1:00.

Also, try to finish watching the next LOST episode by Thursday: Yes, finally a Hurley episode.
Wednesday 3/31
Oh character development! So we finally get to meet a father figure in LOST that is not a total and complete jerk.
Jin father is awesome and gives his son some sage advice. Watch the video clip below and then briefly discuss the following questions: (4-6 sentences total)
What makes Jin's father so much more sympathetic than the other father's we have seen in LOST?
What is Jin's father willing to sacrifice by giving his son the advice he does?
Why is Jin ashamed of his father since dad is such an understanding person?
Do Sun and Jin have a future? I know they say some seemingly final things, but remember emotions are running high.
FROM THIS POINT ON JUST E_MAIL ME EVERYTHING AS SOON AS YOU DO IT.
All the best,
Coach
Thursday 4/23
Read "Almost Paradigm" . Do you think that Hammonds has really learned anything from this disaster that is Jurassic Park?
How are the circumstances of his injury sort of inline with his clueless attitude?
Malcolm falls into a coma. What does this signal symbolically?
Watch "Deus Ex Machina". and we will talk about this episode early next week. Get ready..it is heartbreaking. I never thought that I would feel so bad for Locke, but...well, just be ready.
Have a great weekend.
In addition, feel free to get in contact with me through e-mail if you have any questions about any assignments.
Coach
Monday 4/27
Please watch "Deus Ex Machina". and be prepared to answer questions about it tomorrow.
Today: Read "Decent" This is a great episode where we get to see just how awesome Dr. Grant really is...again.
Please answer the following questions in a short paragraph.
Do you believe that this section is the climax of the novel?
What does Grant realize about raptor behavior that is surprising?
Discuss the ending of this section. Are the raptors villains or do you see them as something else?
Go ahead and submit this assignment today.
We will discuss Locke's episode tomorrow.
Tuesday 4/28
Watch Jack's episode "DO NO HARM" by Thursday
Ex Machina is not an easy episode to watch if you are a fan of Locke.
Briefly discuss the following topics below as they apply to the clip provided and the episode in general.
Does the relationship between Locke and his father mirror the relationship between Locke and Boone?
Is Locke seeing actual visions, affected by something on the island, or is he just going bonkers?
Does Locke have the worst father ever? This guy makes Jack's father look like a saint.
Go ahead and send me your answers today.
Coach
Wednesday 4/29
Please read "Hammond" in Jurassic Park
Well, what a way to go!!
Discuss the following in about 4-6 total sentences:
Even here at the end, what is Hammond's attitude concerning the dinosaurs he created.
Compared to how Grant is portrayed at the end of the novel, what is the last impression the author gives us of Hammond.
Is Hammond's death satisfying from the reader's perspective? Do you feel pity for him at the end or did he get what he
deserved?
Please remember to watch "Do No Harm" for tomorrow.
Feel free to submit as soon as you are done with your work.
Thanks, Coach
Thursday 4/30
We are going to put off talking about Jack's episode until Monday.
Today we are going to talk about something that even strong writers struggle with.
Active and Passive voice. One of the most common problems that developing writers face is slipping into passive voice when active voice is usually far more effective. Below is a quick synopsis as to exactly what constitutes both active and passive voice.
Active voice examples
Monkeys adore bananas. The cashier counted the money. The dog chased the squirrel.
All three sentences have a basic active voice construction: subject, verb, and object. The subject monkey performs the action described by adore. The subject the cashier performs the action described by counted. The subject the dog performs the action described by chased. The subjects are doing, doing, doing—they take action in their sentences. The active voice reminds us of the popular Nike slogan, “Just Do It.”
Passive voice examples
A sentence is in the passive voice, on the other hand, when the subject is acted on by the verb. The passive voice is always constructed with a conjugated form of to be plus the verb’s past participle. Doing this usually generates a preposition as well. That sounds much more complicated than it is—passive voice is actually quite easy to detect. For these examples of passive voice, we will transform the three active sentences above to illustrate the difference. Passive voice examples
Bananas are adored by monkeys. The money was counted by the cashier. The squirrel was chased by the dog.
YOUR ASSIGNMENT TODAY IS TO GO TO NOREDINK>COM and do the assignment on active and passive voice.

Monday 4/3
Watch the next episode of Lost "The Greater Good " for tomorrow. If you like Sayid--you will be happy.
Today: Read "The Beach" from Iteration 7 of Jurassic Park. After you are done reading, watch the clip below.
We will read the last section of Jurassic Park on Wednesday and do a short essay on the differences between how the film ends
and how the book ends. After watching this clip, you will be able to see many differences. Don't turn anything in today. We will
revisit this question on Wednesday.
.
Tuesday 5/5
Hey Everyone, we are almost at the end of LOST. Kate has an episode that we will look at Thursday and then it's time for the Season One final.
Today: There is a saying: "no good deed goes unpunished" How does this saying maybe apply to Sayid in this episode? Do you see any chance on Sayid and Shannon going forward? We also learn that Nadia is not dead; how does this information change how we look at Sayid and Shannon?
Last thing, look at the clip below. Is there a concentrated effort to soften Sawyer? (nice glasses!!!)
Wednesday 5/6
Read "The Beach" and "Approaching Dark" in Jurassic Park.
These are the last two sections in the novel. Now that we have finished, look at the last three sections and identify three major differences between the ending of the novel and the ending of the film. Keeping these three differences in mind, which ending in your opinion is more effective.
You can go ahead and turn this in when you are done.
Remember watch LOST "Born to Run" for tomorrow. This is the last LOST episode before the season final.
Thursday 5/7
OK, so I know that "Born to Run" is setting up many things that are going to happen in an AWESOME finale. Having said that, I think this episode is not LOST at its best. Kate and the meeting with her mom is powerful and unexpected, but the old boyfriend story line is LAME!!! Below is a commentary on Kate's character so far in season one.
Give me a short paragraph discuss if you agree with this critic's analysis:
This leads me to Kate’s main positive trait: protecting others. This is very clear in the island. Every time someone goes in a mission Kate joins them and she always comes back for whoever has been left behind. For example the first time the monster attacks them she goes back for Jack despite Charlie telling her is a crazy idea and when they are captured by the others she has the opportunity to escape but refuse to leave without Sawyer. She’s also the first one to bond with Sun when she’s isolated and tries to help her when is clear that she has problems with her husband. She’s specially protective towards Claire: trying to protect her when someone is trying to hurt her unborn baby,
So I'm going to give you your final assignment in the class that we will complete on Tuesday of next week.
Watch the LOST Finale: IT IS THE BEST...but sort of long.
Thanks for hanging in there with me to the end.
Coach
Monday and Tuesday 5/11 and 5/12
WELL THIS IS IT!!!!
Today is the last English assignment of you high school career!!!
I'm giving you two days to do this because the LOST finale is VERY long (but awesome)
When you are done watching, just give me some commentary concerning how you think they did finishing up season one.
A few things to note:
Sun and JIn's goodbye--heartbreaking
Sawyer and Jack's goodbye--more heartbreaking
Walt and Michael's...well, you will see.
Also, if you want to send me a quick goodbye message that would be fantastic!!!
Last word: I put in the plane boarding scene below. I know there are more iconic scenes in this finale, but I think the message of how we are all connected even if we don't always realize it is especially important.
Stay in touch and contact me if you ever need anything,
Coach
Tuesday 5/12
